Jobs and careers

Join us and help provide professional services to the general public.

The BSH staff of approximately 900 enjoy a pleasant working environment, whether they are based in the Hamburg or Rostock head offices, our branch offices and laboratories in Hamburg-Sülldorf, Bremerhaven, Kiel, Wilhelmshaven, and Wedel, or employed on one of our vessels.

While we cannot compete with private sector salaries in certain fields of employment, we offer long-term staff development and a secure job subject to the provisions of the German Collective Agreement for the Public Service. Depending on your tasks and whether you meet certain personal requirements, you may be selected for appointment as a civil servant. In either case, you will benefit from lifelong job and financial security..

Structured induction phase

From your first day on the job, we will accompany you through your initial phase of employment. We provide you with comprehensive on-the-job training and organise regular events for our new staff. Face-to-face contact is highly important to us. Our inductees are given the opportunity to get to know one another and regularly exchange their views in casual meetings.

Public transport

You can easily reach all our sites by public transport or bicycle. We participate in the Hamburg public transport association’s HVV ProfiTicket corporate ticket scheme and offer our employees ticket subscriptions at affordable rates.

Dining facilities

Privately-run canteens offer a wide selection of dishes in our Hamburg and Rostock head offices from morning till afternoon. Further dining and shopping opportunities can be found in the immediate vicinity. If you want to relax during your lunch break, both places invite you to go for a walk at the waterfront.

Specialist library

The BSH’s specialist library is open to the public and provides you with literature, specialized documents, and various databases to facilitate your research.

Organised sports activities

Do you like to play sports together with others? The BSH’s sports groups are more than happy to welcome new members. At present, the following sports are offered: football (soccer), nine-pin bowling, running, chess, sailing, squash, table football, table tennis and volleyball. The occupational accident insurance covers accidental injuries sustained during organised sports activities.

Occupational health and safety

Occupational health and safety are a top priority for the BSH. Our staff is provided with mandatory personal protective equipment and clothing. Social counselling and occupational health physicians are available at both our head offices.

Welfare association

BSH staff members may join the Sozialwerk der BVBW e. V. This welfare association promotes and organises recreation activities, and e.g. provides affordable holiday apartments at many appealing places across Germany and Europe. Bookings by families with children, ill or handicapped people are given priority.

Idea management

The BSH welcomes any ideas from its workforce. Idea management aims at optimising workflows and work procedures, and helps with cutting costs, improving working conditions, and reducing bureaucracy. In addition to rewards for appropriate suggestions, the adoption of a proposal is a special form of appreciation of a staff member’s expertise and work.

Take an active part and shape your and your colleagues’ everyday work. We look forward to you joining us!
