Foreign educational qualifications
The compatibility or comparability of foreign educational qualifications with German qualifications must be assessed by the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB), and we require a Statement of Equivalence for vocational qualifications or a Statement of Comparability for higher educational qualifications. For further information, please visit the ZAB website.
Language skills
We asses our applicants’ language skills based on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Applications for the BSH’s vocational training and integrated degree programmes are reviewed once annually for the following year. Vacancies are published every year in autumn on the BSH website, the Federal Employment Agency’s job board website, and the BAV website.
Vocational training starts on 1 September. The beginning of training on board of our vessels is subject to the vessels operating schedule, but usually in July on a day to be determined.
Pre-selection procedures
Following the application deadline, application documents are screened by the BAV, and we identify the candidates to be invited to complete a selection test based on the applicants’ certificates. We would therefore ask you to submit all your school-leaving certificates.
Selection test
Approximately two weeks before the test, you will receive an invitation letter containing all relevant information.
The test comprises theory and practical components tailored to the respective vocational training or integrated degree programme. Various preparation options can be found on the Internet. The best candidates passing the selection test will be invited to an interview. The invitation letter sent out to all shortlisted candidates approximately two weeks before the date of the interview.
Selection interview
The selection interview is our chance to meet you and to get to know you better. Successful applicants will possess a friendly and professional demeanour, good soft skills. Also, we are interested to hear about your motivation and career expectations.
The interview panel may consist of up to seven people from the BSH’s different branches, including administration, the employing specialty department, and various employee representatives. Many candidates are intimidated at first, but there is no reason to be afraid. The interview is conducted by the training coordinator and the trainer, whereas the other members of the panel are present to ensure that our selection procedures are as fair and transparent as possible. The interview panel normally consists of:
- representative of the (joint) staff representative board
- representative of the (joint) youth and trainee representative board
- equal opportunities officer
- spokesperson for the disabled, as appropriate.
Decision
Allocation of positions in the vocational training and integrated degree programmes are subject to the selection panel’s decision. Once its decision has been approved by the (joint) staff representative board, candidates are informed of the outcome in writing.
