Training contents include:

  • Physical-chemical analysis and measuring
  • Preparative chemistry (inorganic/organic)

  • Satisfactory school-leaving qualifications, with a focus on chemistry, maths, English and German

Job prospects

Examples include:

  • Work in industrial research, development and production laboratories (in the chemical, metal, mineral oil or pharmaceutical industries), at universities, in chemical research institutions, in the public service (environmental protection or material testing agencies) and in the (luxury) food industry.
  • With a higher education entrance qualification, you may study e.g. chemistry or food chemistry
  • After qualifying as a laboratory assistant, you may pursue many career paths. Through specialised or advanced training and by gaining professional experience you may qualify as a team leader. Another option is to qualify as a senior chemical technician.

Ship mechanic

  • Practical training on the BSH’s surveying, wreck finding and research vessels ATAIR, DENEB, and WEGA, and the surveying vessel KOMET; internships of approx. three to four months on cargo vessels on an international voyage
  • Theory training at the Schleswig-Holsteinsche Seemannsschule vocational school in Lübeck-Travemünde

  • Operation of ships (deck service, engine), watch-keeping
  • Loading and handling equipment
  • Ship’s safety
  • Auxiliary systems engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, and electronic systems
  • Maintenance of machinery and installations (service, inspection, repair)
  • Metal-working
  • Environmental protection and efficient use of energy and materials
  • German and English communication skills for ship operation
  • Planning and preparation of work; inspection and assessment of work results
  • Use and preparation of technical documentation
  • Identify, choose, and use materials, auxiliary materials, fuels and lubricants
  • Operate and monitor auxiliary systems during engine operation
  • Bridge service and watch-keeping
  • Ropework
  • Unmooring and mooring
  • Preservation and paint work
  • Fire prevention and firefighting, maintenance and handling of fire protection gear, firefighting equipment and installations
  • Measures to be taken before and after the deployment of life-saving equipment, handling and checking life-saving equipment and other rescue gear
  • Emergency measures and casualty care

Requirements

Requirements include:

  • Satisfactory school-leaving qualifications, with a focus on German, maths, physics and English
  • Fitness for shipboard duty
  • Deep interest in hands-on work, e.g. on machinery and other technical equipment; ability to work in a team, openness of mind
  • Reliability, attention to detail
  • Ability to work autonomously and make decisions independently
  • High degree of flexibility and independence (changing places of work, longer periods of absence, no contact with home)

Job prospects

  • Employment as a ship mechanic on seagoing vessels
  • Study or undergo specialised training to qualify e.g. as a nautical watch officer, master of ship, officer in charge of the engineer watch or chief engineer officer
  • Work in international shipping, the public service, or industry

BSH job prospects

  • We seek to permanently employ our apprentices at the end of their successfully completed training as a ship mechanic
  • Permanently employed ship mechanics may qualify as a hydrographic survey technician or coxswain
