Jörg Kaufmann

After completing his officer training and studies at the German Navy, Jörg Kaufmann served as watch and commanding officer on submarines. His knowledge of working at sea, with the importance of bringing ship and crew safely to the next port in all weathers is supplemented by his experience in working with safety management systems in merchant shipping at the classification society Bureau Veritas Germany. His main motivation was to make shipping even safer. To that end the working procedures and communication processes on board as well as ashore and in connection with each other are to be constantly checked for further improvement potential. As a lead investigator at the Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU), Jörg Kaufmann analysed accidents in order to prepare safety recommendations to avoid future accidents. After almost seven years as head of the Federal Bureau, he took over as head of the Maritime Shipping Department (S) of the BSH in 2012. In addition to his wide-ranging tasks in Germany, he is also involved in the work of international bodies for the development of global conventions. The goal is greater safety at sea and improved protection for the marine environment - worldwide.
