Thomas Dehling

As early as in his teenage years Thomas Dehling already experimented with sextants and astronomical navigation and deepened his interest in surveying by studying with the Bundeswehr. After completing his officer's career, he initially headed the cadastral department of a Berlin surveying office and from 1998 took over the management of "hydrographic surveying and wreck search" at the BSH. The fact that Mars is better surveyed than the seas motivated Thomas Dehling to catch up and to prepare as much seabed data as possible for navigation and to make it available to all users of the sea in order to improve safety at sea. For Thomas Dehling, the acquisition of geodata using state-of-the-art methods at sea, in the air and in space and their use for the production of digital nautical charts in almost real time is just as much a challenge as passing on this knowledge to the next generation. As a lecturer for young hydrographic scientists and promoter of interested parties and talents, he also focuses on vocational training as head of the Nautical Hydrography department. In addition, he is chairman of the German Hydrographic Society (DHyG) and represents Germany at the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) in Monaco.
