Topographic mapping of the sea floors is essential for the safety and efficiency of shipping. This includes monitoring the position of objects on the sea floor (such as wrecks) so that they can be recorded in sea charts.
Information for planning and coordinating the various activities within the German maritime territory such as shipping, fishing, construction activities, wind farm operations or oceanographic research.
How are hazardous substances in the ocean recorded? Which substances are harmful for the marine environment? Which methods do we have to identify those responsible for environmental pollution?
Water level predictions and storm surge warnings are two important tasks at BSH. What are tides and how are water levels recorded? Here you can find out more.
Different methods are used to gather oceanographic data: monitoring stations at fixed locations, free-flowing buoys, results recorded by ships or through remote sensing. The resulting long-term data series offer important information about changes to the marine environment.
As part of a comprehensive forecasting system we produce a range of models on the physical state of the ocean. Find out more about these models and how they are used.
Find out more about our research and development as well as our current and forthcoming projects.
Spatial data infrastructure, INSPIRE or Open Data – here you can find more information on these issues and how we implement them.
