Storm surges

Reports on storm surges and extreme water levels

North Sea

At the German North Sea coast, in Emden, Bremen and Hamburg, three levels of storm surges are distinguished:

  1. Storm surge: 1.5 to 2.5 m above mean high water (MHW)
  2. severe storm surge: 2.5 to 3.5 m above MHW
  3. Very severe storm surge: more than 3.5 m above MHW

Baltic Sea

At the German Baltic coast four level of storm surges are distinguished:

  1. Storm surge: 1.00-1.25 m above mean sea level
  2. medium storm surge: 1.25-1.50 m above mean sea level
  3. severe storm surge: 1.50-2.00 m above mean sea level
  4. very severe storm surge: more than 2.00 m above average water level
