Wreck search is the basis for the safety and efficiency of navigation. The information is mainly used for the safety of maritime traffic. Not only real wrecks are examined, but also all possible obstacles. Objects such as large stones, containers, ammunition remnants and others are also included. Wrecks that do not endanger surface navigation are also dangerous for fishing, for example.

The BSH maintains a database of underwater obstacles. It contains about 2,500 positions. Underwater obstacles are basically to be regarded as dangerous spots that must be avoided and passed at a safe distance.

The wreck information that is important for shipping is published in the nautical charts.
