Measuring stations in the Baltic Sea

In the Baltic Sea there are 4 different platform types, which are arranged on 5 different positions.

  • At the LEUCHTTURM KIEL (LK), the sensors are installed on the foundation as well as on a small platform on the seabed at a distance of approx. 70 m.
  • The large-size buoy FEHMARN BELT (FB) is a disc-shaped construction with a diameter of approx. 12 m. Until the end of 1996 the buoy served as a navigation aid and was rebuilt afterwards. Since 2000 it has been used as a scientific measuring and fairway marking platform.
  • The carrier of the station DARßER SCHWELLE (DS) is a mast, which is vertically stabilized by its own buoyancy and attached to a heavy universal joint foot on the seabed. This gives the mast the freedom to react to the forces of waves and current. The mast has been in service since 1993.
  • Another disc-shaped large-size buoy with a diameter of 10 m serves as a platform for the station ODER BANK (OB). This station has been in operation since the beginning of 1996.
  • A new type of semi-submersible buoy was launched in September 2002 at the position ARKONA BECKEN (AB). The buoy has a cylindrical shape with 2 sections of different diameters. The upper section, which penetrates the sea surface, has a diameter of 1 m, the lower section of 2.4 m. The upper section, which penetrates the sea surface, has a diameter of 1 m, the lower section of 2.4 m. The total height is 16.5 m.
