National Noise Registry

In the world's oceans, underwater sound (hydro-sound) is generated by natural sources such as wind, waves, sea ice and animals. But humans also generate additional sound sources through their activities on and in the sea.

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) maintains Germany's national noise register as part of the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSRL). We collect information and measurements on impulsive sound events (pile driving, detonations, military activities, seismic and other impulsive sound events) as well as continuous sound measurements from the German North and Baltic Seas.
