International Workshop on Port Reception Facilities for Sewage

Kiel, Germany, from 30 June to 1 July 2016

The German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) organized in cooperation with the Port of Kiel and the Baltic Ports Organization (BPO) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) an International Workshop on Port Reception Facilities for the Baltic Sea as Special Area according to MARPOL Annex IV.

The event took place at the premises of the Wissenschaftszentrum in Kiel from 30 June to 1 July 2016 and contributed to enhance information exchange and cooperation efforts among all involved stakeholder groups, i.e. politics (regional/EU, national/local), administration, municipal sewage treatment providers, ports and cruise/shipping industry and NGOs.

The workshop, among others, provided for an update on regulatory developments at the international and regional level, as well as on other relevant implementation efforts at the national levels related to PRFs.

It also provided for a forum to discuss selected political, technical and legal issues, and finally identified ways how to address challenges ahead, strengthen cooperation and finding common solutions.

The workshop included a site visit of the Port of Kiel or the Municipal Waste Water Treatment of Kiel, as well as a networking dinner at the end of day 1.

See for more information the Concept Note and the Agenda, as well as the relevant press release and the workshop report.
