To obtain more information about a particular vacancy, please contact the person in charge of the vacancy. They will be pleased to answer any question you may have.

How to apply
Do you wish to apply for a vacant position at the BSH?The following information will be useful to you:

Please send your written application, complete with a resumé and full references (copies) directly to

Please do not use an application folder because the copies will not be returned to you.

When applying for a vacant position, please remember to indicate the code of the particular vacency in your application letter. It will allow your application to be included in the application procedure. Without the code number, the Dienstleistungszentrum (DLZ, service centre) will not be able to process your application. Please also note the closing date for applications, which is indicated for each vacant position.
Information to be included with your application:
- a signed application letter stating why you consider yourself qualified for the vacant position;
- a complete, detailed resumé;
- certified documentation of your qualifications (copies);
- references.
What happens next?
Your application will be processed at DLZ using the Ministry’s personnel management system. They will also confirm receipt of your application. After the closing date, DLZ will pass on your application documents to the responsible personnel clerk at the BSH who will continue processing the application.
Interest inquiring about employment possibilities
In case you wish to submit a letter of interest inquiring about employment possibilities, please address it to Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie, Bernhard-Nocht-Str. 78, D-20359 Hamburg. We will then check whether a suitable vacancy is available. However, your chance of success will be higher if you refer in your application letter to an existing vacancy. Your application will be returned if there is no suitable vacancy.
Training of articled clerks at the BSH
The BSH provides training opportunities for articled clerks at its Hamburg headquarters.
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- first state examination
- depending on the envisaged activity, good English language skills
- high motivation to work at the BSH
- ability to work in a team.
Your application should include the following information:
- an application letter in which you let us know the department, section, or subject area you would like to work in,
- a description of your professional career (resumé),
- copies of your certificates (school leaving certificate (German „Abitur“), examination certificate, any other certificates acquired).

Application for an internship at the BSH
To ensure smooth processing of your application for an internship at the BSH and in order to make sure that your internship will be a success, please send us your written application at the earliest date possible, also letting us know whether you are applying for a high-school internship, a university internship, or an internship for your professional development.
Your application should include the following information:
- an application letter stating the subject area(s) you would like to work in, and the BSH headquarters (Hamburg or Rostock) where you would preferably work (indicating the exact date and duration of your planned internship);
- a description of your career so far (resumé);
- copies of your certificates;
- pupils applying for an internship should enclose a copy of their last school report and the school‘s confirmation of the date and duration of the internship;
- university students are requested to enclose their latest enrolment certificate.
