Negative Surges in the Southern Baltic Sea
(Western and Central Parts)

The characteristics, the severity, the frequency and the factors leading to the development of negative surge (water below 440 cm) in the southern Baltic Sea are described using data from the German gauge stations Wismar, Warnemünde and Sassnitz and the Polish gauge stations Swinoujscie and Kolobrzeg. Besides, 20 major negative surge events in the period from 1955 to 2005 and the meteorological situation leading to these events are discussed in detail.
