The axis of a navigation light must be aligned perpendicular to the
construction waterline (CWL) using levelling pieces if necessary. Navigation
lights that have been installed askew illuminate the sky or the water but
do not serve their intended purpose.
Heading marks on navigation lights (only on sector lights) must
be aligned exactly in forward direction.
Navigation lights shall not be obscured either by built-in components
(bow pulpit, rails, headstay with furling genoa) or by mobile equipment
(anchor, flagstaff, stand-by outboard motor, swimming ladder, fenders in
baskets, dinghy).
Navigation lights that have been damaged during clumsy berthing manoeuvres
should either be repaired at a BSH approved workshop or replaced completely.
The same applies to lights that have become dull during use.
As a matter of principle, you should use only approved incandescent lamps
with the correct wattage in your navigation lights. Approved incandescent
lamps are marked with the letters ZP, an anchor, the letter D, and a four-digit
number.
The approval for your navigation light becomes invalid if you use a
non-approved incandescent lamp.

Note: the deficiencies shown are rare examples. The condition
of the navigation lights shown does not imply in any way that the navigation
light of a particular manufacturer is below standard.
Any questions you may have concerning the installation of navigation lights
on pleasure craft should be addressed to the Wasserschutzpolizei or the Wasser-
und Schifffahrtsdirektion in your navigation area.
