The Flag Certificate is an official document proving that a sea-going
vessel is entitled to fly the German flag. The validity of the document is
eight years, and renewal is possible. A fee of € 40 is charged.
The following documents are required when applying for a Flag
Certificate:
- Application
- Identity card or passport, either originals or officially certified
copies of pages 1 and 2, and 2 - 5, respectively.
- Purchase contract, original or officially certified copy.
- Confirmation of complete payment (original or officially certified
copy), or original receipt or bank statement.
- Technical data:

construction drawing (copy)

Boat Certificate from the manufacturer,

or (as an exception), confirmation by third party of the following data:
hull length, breadth, weight (displacement), boat type, shipyard (and location),
yard number, engine data and number
- 2 photographs of the ship: one showing its full length, and another
one documenting that the ship's name and port of registry are firmly affixed
to the ship and are fully visible.
If available:
- Copy of page 1 of the radio licence.
- Copy of the document confirming issue of an official registration
number.
- Joint-ownership contract (original) or officially certified copy
including proof of the owners' personal data (cf. 2).
