Neither their length and breadth nor their tons deadweight had been found
suitable for comparisons of ship size. The gross and net tonnage given in a
ship's Tonnage Certificate is the basis for the determination of port and canal
dues, pilotage charges, safety requirements (acc. to SOLAS, MARPOL and STCW
rules), technical equipment, crew size, fleet and transport statistics, insurance,
among others.
The maritime shipping department in the BSH is competent for the measurement
of all sea-going vessels under German flag (including pleasure crafts) and issues
them with international and national certificates.
The measurement will be carried out according to the International Convention
on Tonnage Measurement of Ships (London 1969). Deviating from the ICT-69 rules,
passages through the Suez and Panama canal require special certificates, which
can be issued as well.
All volume computations are executed by modern CAE-software.
In addition, consulting in measurement inquiries from shipping companies
and other persons is an important duty.
