The BSH routinely carries out wave measurements at several positions in the German Bight and the German part of the Baltic Sea

Current wave data

The purpose of the measurements is to gather wave data serving the following purposes:
  • safety of coastal shipping, small craft, ferries, surveying operations and information service
  • continual verification of the DWD wave forecasting model
  • general description of wave conditions and wave climate

The measurements are performed using moored wave-following buoys. Measurement results are the parameters significant wave height, wave period, and wave direction, the latter measured by some specially equipped buoys.

The wave data are published once a year on this website. This form replaces the printed volumes which were published annually until 1995. Data from the following years are available:

2002   2003   2004 2005 2006
