KLIWAS is a governmental research programme of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS). Since March 2009, Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH, Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency), Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD, German Meteorological Service), Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde (Federal Institute of Hydrology), and Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau (Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute) have jointly studied possible consequences of climate change on
waterways and shipping and are developing suitable adaptation strategies.
In close co-operation with DWD’s marine weather office and universities, the BSH investigates potential climate-related atmospheric and oceanographic changes in the North-East Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic Sea with a view to developing suitable adaptation options for shipping and other maritime uses.
