Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The aim of this cruise was to investigate the biodiversity, abundance and distribution of pelagic fauna, including nekton and macrozooplankton, in the deep-sea ecosystem of Cape Verde, and to combine biological observations with chemical and physical observations. We used the manned submersible JAGO (14 dives), the towed camera system PELAGIOS (9 deployments), and two kinds of multinet (midi and maxi) (9 and 12 hauls respectively), as well as CTD sampling to collect hydrographic data and environmental DNA samples. In the leeway of the islands Santo Ant?o and Fogo we performed mesopelagic stations (1000 m) and bathypelagic stations (3000 m) using the mentioned instruments. Elaborate physical sampling around the islands was performed using CTD, microstructure and ADCP. A mesoscale eddy was sampled with all our oceanographic instruments. Additionally we performed a full oceanographic and biological sampling at the Cape Verde Ocean Observatory, north of Sao Vicente. Our sampling provided one of the first views on the nearshore pelagic deep-sea ecosystem of Cape Verde using our observational instruments, and the biological specimens collected resulted in unique photographic and biological records of poorly known organisms. The data will contribute to establish baseline biological observations of the Cape Verdean deep sea, and to investigate the role of large pelagic fauna, including gelatinous macrozooplankton, in the transport of carbon from the water column to the seafloor.
