Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Goal of the present research cruise was 1) to quantify of nutrient and oxygen fluxes between sediment and water, 2) to study Nitrogen Isotope dynamics in sediments, 3) to quantify respiration and primary production in the water column, 4) to investigate the effect of bioturbation/bioirrigation on benthic pelagic coupling. The works was carried out in the framework of the BMBF Project NOAH and the HGF Programme PACES II. Cruise progress The research vessel Heincke embarked on the 16th May 2018 from Bremerhaven towards Station C near Helgoland. Because of strong winds the station work was started on the 17th. Station work included 1) mapping of the seafloor with the multibeam system, 2) water sampling with the CTD-system, 3) multi-corer sampling for ex situ flux measurements and nitrogen isotope studies, and the characterization of the macrobenthos, 4) deployment of two lander systems for observing sediment and near-sediment hydrodynamics (SEDOBS) and nutrient and oxygen fluxes (Fluxso) and 5) mapping of the seafloor with a videosled. Between the deployments and between station the distribution of seabirds and sea mammals were mapped on transects. It took about 2 days to complete the work at one station. After Station NOAH C, the stations NOAH-F, NOAH-A, Marum-CCPG, NOAH-E und NOAH-D were investigated. At station NOAH E newly formed pockmarks were found during 2016. The area was partly mapped during the previous cruise Heincke 510 and extended. The last station NOAH D was finished on May 29th and Heincke berthed at the AWI pier around 22:30.
