Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The target species during this cruise was Baltic cod. The main aim of this cruise was to catch cod in good condition for agging, as part of the international project TABACOD (TAgging of BAltic Sea COD). Data on length, weight and position at capture and release of the internally and externally tagged cod were recorded. Data on the length, weight and position of recaptured cod tagged during this and other cruises conducted within the TABACOD project will be used to gain a better understanding of the distribution of cod, to estimate growth rates and to develop a better understanding of the formation of age rings within the otoliths (ear stones) of cod. Germany is participating in this project in cooperation with Sweden, Poland and Denmark. Only 10 days of tagging were accomplished during this 15-day cruise period due to weather conditions. Trawling was conducted from the German RV "Clupea", whilst traveling at a speed of 3 knots. Up to 3 hauls were conducted each day. The trawl gear used was the standardized small trawl for International Baltic Demersal Surveys TV-3 520# (mesh size = 40 mm). To focus the fishing power of the trawl on cod, the standard extension piece was replaced by FLEX (mesh size = 30 mm), a flatfish bycatch reduction device developed by the Thunen Institute in 2014. The size of cod catches was very variable during this trip, ranging from hauls containing no cod, to hauls containing 105 kg of cod. The average total weight of cod per haul was 22 kg. All trawling took place northeast of the island of Rugen, in rectangle 38G3 (ICES SD 24). Trawls were conducted at depths ranging between 16 and 43 m. A total of 732 cod were tagged during the trip, with total lengths ranging from 172 to 620 mm.
