Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

HE500: The main goal of RV Heincke cruise 500 was the detection and mapping of natural and anthropogenic structures on the seafloor of the german EEZ. Hydroacoustic lines were surveyed in the Helgoland Reef area to monitor the pockmarks first detected during RV Heincke cruise 455 in 2015. The second survey area was in the so called "duckbill", a region characterised by a high fishing pressure and with anthropogenic trawl marks on the seafloor. During the survey a towed sidescan sonar system, as well as the ship mounted EM 710 multibeam echosounder und the SES subbottom profiler were used. Additionally a single-beam echosounder with an integrated automatic seafloor classification system (QTC 5.5) was deployed. The working area is located in the eastern part of the "Entenschnabel" (Dogger Bank). This area was selected based on the sediment distribution map of Figge (1981) and maps of fishing pressure (NOAH homepage) Survey activities during Heincke 500 cruise started at 00:30 hrs on October 31st 2017 and ended at 08:00 hrs on November 9th 2017. Due to bad weather conditions in the survey area (wind up to 8 Bft, wave heights >4m) the survey operations had to be stopped 3 days ahead of the plan.
