Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Short cruise report HE-483 This oceanographic and marine geoscience excursion is a key element of the HGF graduate school POLMAR AWI and part of the undergraduate education at the Jacobs University Bremen. The weather and sea conditions were good (first and last day) to fair (wind between 5-6 with gusts of 7)/ bad (wind between 7-8 with gusts of 9) and hence some of the students were partly seasick. The course provided the students an excellent opportunity to gain some practical hands-on experience. They were able to put to test various theories they had learned during their lectures and on board. They learned basics of marine geology, physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, biological oceanography (plankton und benthos) and marine geophysics. The cruise also supported and fostered team work as they had to process and interpret the acquired data together. The last day of both legs where planned and run by the students. During the evaluation we only received positive replies. Leg 1 (POLMAR; April 19-22): Embarking 6:15 on April 19. This day was mostly used to set up and explain the equipment. The following days were spent at sea. As the weather forecast for the 22nd was not optimistic, the students organized the cruise plan for the 21st. The last day the weather didn't allow to go out and we organized a geologic fieldtrip on Helgoland. The group left with the 16:00 ferry to Cuxhaven, where a bus carried them back to Bremerhaven. Leg 2 (Jacobs University; April 23-26): The students arrived with the ferry to Helgoland at 1pm and immediately embarked. As the weather didn't allow to go out we organized lectures and a geology fieldtrip for the 23rd and 24th. Next day, we left port at 6 am under fair weather and sea conditions. Several students became sea sick but we managed to demonstrate most of the gear. On the last day the students ran the program. At 4 pm we reached, as planned, the dock next to building A and unloaded.
