Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

On this cruise, five students of the Institute for Hydrobiology and Fisheries Science (IHF) were given the opportunity to learn about the most commonly used scientific methods, gears and working procedures on board a research vessel for fisheries science as well as biological oceanography. The students learned these skills on a scientific cruise with pursues current research objectives within running third-party funded projects of the IHF. One important aspect of the cruise was the sampling of planktivorous prey (larval to adult life stages) of sprat and cod in different basins of the Baltic Sea. Sampling was conducted with plankton nets as well as a Video Plankton Recorder (VPR). The VPR recordings were needed for the parameterisation of prey concentration and composition in consumption models. The other important aspect of the cruise was the investigation of fish and plakton distribution (most important of sprat), in the Mecklenburg Bay, Arkona Basin, Bornholm Basin and Gotland Basin.
