Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The scientific programme of the cruise M138 includes (i) the assessment of the distributions of particles and organic matter in the OMZ off Peru, (ii) quantification of particle/organic matter fluxes through the OMZ and deciphering the role of zooplankton therein, (iii) investigation of the role of particles/organic matter availability for N2 fixation, N loss, N2O formation, microbiological diversity and activity, (iv) assessment of the role of anoxia on particle remineralisation rates and elemental stoichiometry, and (v) investigation of the variability of the hydrodynamical forcing relevant for nutrient turnover. The work in the OMZ off Peru (along four transects perpendicular to the coast, one transect parallel to the coast and the IMARPE transect off Callao) was complemented by a CTD/RO section from 4?S to 2?N along 85?50'W in order to investigate the eastward flowing Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) which feeds the OMZ in the eastern tropical South Pacific Ocean (ETSP) with oxygen (O2). Two gliders and three moorings (all deployed during M135/M136 were recovered)
