Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The R/V SONNE expedition SO258 leg 2 is part of the research project INGON, which is collaboration between the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. Using the example of the Indian-Antarctic Break-up in Early Cretaceous, SO258 INGON aims to investigate magmatic and tectonic processes that trigger the break-up of continents and the formation of ocean basins. Cruise SO-258 Leg 2 investigated the crustal structure of the southern Sri Lankan continental margin and the 85 degrees East ridge, the magnetic field frozen in the crust offshore Sri Lanka. We applied different geophysical methods, including magnetics, gravity, seismic reflection and refraction, bathymetry (KONGSBERG EM 122), and sub-bottom profiling (ATLAS PARASOUND DS P70). Additionally we also acquired ADCP data along most of the profiles.Integration of the results of SO258 Leg 2 with those mapping and geological sampling of magmatic structures during SO258 Leg 1 conducted by GEOMAR Kiel will substantially improve our understanding of breakup of India/Sri Lanka from Gondwana and the early geodynamic evolution of the Indian Ocean.
