Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Hydrothermal systems along volcanic island arcs are different to those at mid-ocean ridges because of their mostly shallow water depth and strong magmatic input into their fluids and hydrothermal plumes. As these plumes often reach up into the photic zone they discharge large quantities of material into the surface water layers. The objectves of our cruise were the characterization of hydrothermal systems at the Kermadec Arc and the understanding of their role for the global elemental budget of the ocean and for local chemical and biological processes in the water column and at the seafloor. RV Sonne left port in Noumea (New Caledonia) on 22 December, 2016, to sail southeast towards the Kermadec volcanic arc. In all four working areas (Macauley, Haungaroa, Brothers and Rumble III) we explored and sampled diffuse and focused hot vent fluids and dense mussel beds with several dives of the deep-sea robot ROV QUEST. Geophysical measurements helped us to get a better picture of subsurface processes. CTD rosette water sampler deployments, either towed over the area or as vertical casts, were used to map the hydrothermal plumes and estimate the distribution and transport of the hydrothermal emissions. A trace metal rosette and an in-situ filtration pump were used to sample the far-field hydrothermal plume. On 21 January, the cruise ended in Auckland, NZ after the successful completion of 90 sampling and survey stations.
