Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Leg 1 and 3 (POLMAR and Jacobs University) This oceanographic and marine geoscience excursion is a key element of the HGF graduate school POLMAR and the Centre of Excellence POGO at AWI and part of the undergraduate education at the Jacobs University Bremen. The weather and sea conditions were relatively bad (wind between 5-6 with gusts of 7) and hence some of the students were partly seasick. The course provided the students an excellent opportunity to gain some practical hands-on experience. They were able to put to test various theories they have learned during their lectures and on Bord. They learned basics of marine geology, physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, biological oceanography (plankton und benthos) and marine geophysics. The cruise also supported and fostered team work as they had to process and interpret the acquired data together. The last day of legs 1 and 3 where planned and ran by the students. During the evaluation we only received positive replies. Leg 2 (POGO) The overarching goal was to teach oceanographic methodologies with a focus on plankton and to give the participants the opportunity to manage their own cruise as much as possible from preparing the cruise, managing the cruise itself, as well as the post-cruise data processing. The participants were introduced to and independently applied a set of sampling methods and processed the resulting samples, were responsible for correct archival of all data and meta data. Group leaders were assigned in each group that had the added responsibility of assigning tasks and ensuring efficient workflows in the lab and on deck. This physical, chemical and biological oceanographic excursion is a key element of the POGO Centre of Excellence in Oceanography, which has been co-ordinated by the Biological Station Helgoland since 2013. To maximize the scientific and teaching outputs we chose sampling stations with pronounced environmental gradients and for which prior data are also available so that more detailed comparative analyses of the resulting data sets will be possible in future and can be used by POGO students for independent research projects which are an integral part of their training at AWI.
