Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Meso- and submesoscale processes occur at oceanic fronts, inducing lateral exchange. These processes include e.g. eddies, filaments and shear instabilities. They modify the local stratification, the biological productivity of the region and the distribution of tracers. At the upwelling front off Namibia, energy is transferred from the mesoscales (the upwelling) to submesoscale processes (filaments, eddies and instabilities), which in their combination reflect back onto the larger scales, resulting in a cooling of the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Coarse resolution ocean and climate models neglect these processes and therefore cannot reproduce their impact. During cruise M132 high resolution in-situ measurements were carried out in order to understand these processes and develop a basis for a better representation in models. The working area was small and centered at the eastern boundary of the Atlantic Ocean. The focus was on the dynamics of upwelling filaments, which occur often at the upwelling front off Namibia. We studied the vertical structure of filaments, as well as the mechanisms of filament dissipation. Used were several underway systems (Scanfish, Thermosalinograph, ADCP, underway-CTD), autonomous platforms (glider) and station-based measurements (CTD, MSS). The ship followed filaments and crossed the boundaries of the features several times. A Lagrangian experiment using surface drifters was performed as well.
