Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The focus of cruise MSM49 was to assess the impact of the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) and of a shallow topographic feature, Senghor Seamount, on the abundance, distribution, diversity and trophic structure of the medium-sized pelagic fauna (macrozooplankton, micronekton, and squids). Using a combination of optical and net sampling techniques, we investigated the ecological zonation of these oceanographic features in the Cape Verde area and performed collections for detailed foodweb studies. The cruise is embedded in past and future work in the area to understand the communities and ecology of Senghor Seamount and to establish a baseline of pelagic communities around the eastern tropical Atlantic oxygen minimum zone. This will contribute to better understand how environmental change in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic, in particular change in the OMZ, impact pelagic communities and the biogeochemical cycle and the foodweb they are part of. The cruise started in Las Palmas on 28. Nov 2015. The first sampling station was the CVOO (Cape Verde Oceanic Observatory) north of Cape Verde, which was reached on 1. Dec 2015. The sampling scheme included CTD-rosette, 1m2 and 10m2-MOCNESS, IKMT, WP3, PELAGIOS and UVP, down to a depth of 1000 m. Two further stations were sampled to the north of Cape Verde, before we reached Senghor Seamount. This seamount is located NE of the island of Sal and rises from 3300 m to a minimum summit depth of 100 m. We sampled the northwestern and southeastern slopes and the summit, before we proceeded to the southeast to search for the core of a cyclonic eddy, which had been tracked by satellite for the past week. The core with a lens of very low oxygen concentrations was found on 11. Dec and sampled successfully for the next two days. The last three stations were located in the area of the most strongly pronounced oxygen minimum zone to the east and south of Cape Verde. Sampling at the last station was finished on 20. Dec, and Maria S. Merian arrived in the port of Mindelo on 21. Dec at 08:30.
