Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The aim of the cruise was to re-visit the DISCOL Experimental Area (DEA), a Mn-nodule area in the Peru Basin, which was disturbed in 1989 by a 8m wide plough system during SO61 in 1989. Following studies with RV SONNE showed how the disturbed area recovered during studies undertaken during cruises SO64, 77 and 106. SO242/1 is the first of two legs back to the DAE to continue the recovery observations in that area and gain new insight in the geochemical variability of the sediment, acquire physical data of the water column, perform highly detailed hydroacoustic investigations and investigate the benthic biodiversity of all size classes (prokaryotes, meiofauna, macrofauna and megafauna). For physical observations in the water column several CTD casts were undertaken and one 400m long thermistor mooring with 200 thermistors was deployed and will be recovered during SO242/2. Two landers equipped with ADCPs (300kHz and 1200kHz) as well as CTDs (including optical backscatter sensors) were deployed several time. AUV Abyss from GEOMAR acquired multibeam data of the DEA area and its surrounding as well as side scan and extensive photo imaging information. Box corers and TV-guided multicorers sampled sediment inside and outside the plough tracks and in few reference areas. Gravity corer deployments recovered sediments almost 10m deep. An epibenthic sledge collected fauna from the seafloor surface and an amphipod trap was used to collect scavangers.
