Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Scientific objectives: Recovery of three mini-landers and field experiments (artificial substrata, weighed and labeled cold-water corals (Lophelia pertusa)) in close proximity to Norwegian cold-water coral bioherms (2 x Nordleksa Reef, 1 x Sula Reef Complex). Analysis of the data will allow us to correlate natural reef bioerosion and growth rates with the geo-physical and hydrodynamic characteristics (e.g. temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, etc.) from the three development sites after one year in-situ incubation (for details see POS455 cruise report). Another main objective was to collect living and dead specimens of Lophelia pertusa and associated organisms with the manned submersible JAGO for ongoing laboratory experiments concerning the effects of climate change (ocean acidification and ocean warming) on ecophysiological parameters of the corals (e.g. growth, routine metabolism, fitness) in the framework of the BMBF funded project BIOACID at GEOMAR in Kiel and partner institutions. Furthermore, all visited reef locations were extensively video-documented (HD quality) for habitat characterization and biodiversity assessments of cold-water coral ecosystems. Brief cruise narrative: 15 August 2014: start in Troms?, Norway. 17 August 2014: arrival at station I (Nordleksa), JAGO handling training, deep-water pumping. 18 August 2014: two CTD casts and two JAGO dives. 19 August 2014: two CTD casts and two JAGO dives with deep-water pumping during the second dive; afterwards heading to Brekstad. 20 August 2014: embarkation of scientist, afterwards heading back to station I, one JAGO dive and recovery of 1st lander (acoustic released). 21 August 2014: three JAGO dives and recovery of 2nd lander (acoustic released). 22 August 2014: heading to Brekstad, afterwards partial crew-exchange, heading back to station I, two JAGO dives. 23 August 2014: two JAGO dives (sponge sampling). 24 August 2014: two JAGO dives with partial crew-exchange in Brekstad between the two dives and deep-water pumping during the second dive. 25 August 2014: deep-water pumping, afterwards two JAGO dives; in the evening: heading to station IV (Sula Reef Complex). 26 August 2014: two JAGO dives and one CTD in between. 27 August 2014: two JAGO dives with deep-water pumping during the second dive. 28 August 2014: two CTD casts and two JAGO dives (incl. the recovery of the 3rd lander), deep-water pumping in the night. 29 August 2014: one JAGO dive and one CTD cast, a second dive was cancelled due to bad weather conditions / end of scientific station work; heading to Bergen. 31 August 2014, Bergen: partial crew disembarkations. 1 September 2014, Bergen: customs stuff and CITES declaration of sampled cold-water corals (Lophelia pertusa). 2 September 2014: departure from Bergen and heading to Esbjerg, Denmark. 4 September 2014, Esbjerg: customs stuff and CITES declaration of sampled cold-water corals, cleanup and disembarkation of scientific crew; end of cruise POS473.
