Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Repeat hydrography in the Med The purpose of this cruise is to carry out an observational program in the Mediterranean Sea along the lines of the GO-SHIP project, i.e. a multidiciplinary physical and chemical oceanographic cruise. The cruise track extends from the eastern extreme of the Mediterranean through the Strait of Gibraltar and with a section towards the Portugeese coast to document the outflowing Mediterranean water. Measurements carried out on-board include physical measurements with CTD (P,S,T,O2), oxygen, nutrients, DIC, total alkalinty, pH, CFC-12, and SF6. Additional samples for He3/H3, C14 /C13, Ba, PFOS, Nd-isotopes, Ra-isotopes, and Hg have been taken for later analysis on-shore. Additionally, aerosol samples has been taken along the cruise track, and surface seawater has been filtered for the contents of POPs. Incubation experiments for nitrogen fixation has been undertaken. Finally, three biological projects has been filtering seawater samples for DNA sequencing with the aim of better characterize the microbiological community, and to possibly use this information to better track water masses. One project focused on the isotopic composition and abundance of cocolitophores.
