Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The objective of Cruise MSM 17/1 was to obtain wide-angle refraction seismic data, reflection seismic data, and high-resolution bathymetric data from the landfall area of Walvis Ridge, and the oceanic basins north (Angola Basin) and south (Walvis Basin) of the ridge. This is to be used to constrain the nature and architecture of the crust and lithosphere seaward of the Northern Namibian coast. Also, three ARGO Floats were deployed en route from Mindelo, teh strating port of the voyage. 24 Ocean Bottom Magnetotelluric Stations were deployed for a long-term recording, to be recovered later on Cruise MSM17/2. Airgun shots on two of the profiles (Profiles 4 and 5) were fired to be recorded at onshore seismometer stations deployed by GFZ Potsdam in the Kaoko Veld. R/V MARIA S. MERIAN set sail at 19:00 UTC, 24th November, 2010 at the port of Mindelo, Sao Vicente Island, Republic of Cape Verde, for the working area offshore Namibia. The equator was crossed at mid-day on Monday, 29th November. After arrival at the northern end of Profile 3 at 4th December, 15:30 UTC (18?08.21?S / 09?56.25?E) one OBS and one OBMT were deployed, and a joint CTD and releaser test was taken to 4000 m water depth. In the following 111 further OBS/OBH deployments were successfully achieved. All stations were recovered with no down time and loss of material. The end of the last profile (Profile 4) was reached at 27th December 14:53 UTC at 20?42,10?S / 12?18,05?E. Streamer and airguns were recovered and stowed, and transit for Walvis Bay started. Walvis Bay was reached at about 06:30 UTC on 29th December 2010, marking the end of Expedition MSM 17/1. Data were collected in quadrants 370, 371, 406 and 407 (see map below)
