Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
SO208 PLUMEFLUX uses a multi-disciplinary approach to better understand transport mechanisms of plume material in the upper mantle, the geodynamic evolution of the central East Pacific and the biodiversity and zoogeography in this area. The major targets of the cruise were (1) to map and sample seamounts and ocean crust on the Cocos Plate between the Central American trench and the East Pacific Rise and (2) to drill sites along profiles perpendicular to the ridge axis of the Cocos-Nazca Spreading Center (CNS) using the mobile drill Rockdrill 2 of the British Geological Survey. During Leg 1 bathymetric mapping and reconnaissance hard rock sampling by dredging of seamounts has been carried out on the Cocos Plate, as well as sampling of the marine fauna in this area. Within only 12 days at sea, a total of 41 stations (28 dredges, 2 TV grabs, and 11 multi-corers) were carried out. Of these deployments, 23 recovered magmatic rocks, 15 volcaniclastics, and 13 Mn-Fe oxides. Due to a series of unfortunate circumstances beyond our control, the planned Rockdrill 2 deployment on Leg 2 has been canceled. Instead we collected four profiles perpendicular the Cocos-Nazca Spreading center with a TV grab and by dredging In total. 60 out 79 of dredge hauls, 1 TV-grab deployment and 4 multi-corer deployments recovered volcanic rocks/and or sediments from the seafloor during Leg 2.
