Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Objectives and brief narrative of the cruise The aim of the cruise was to carry out the iron fertilization cruise LOHAFEX in a mesoscale eddy in the productive south-western Atlantic. The region north of the island of South Georgia was initially selected as altimeter images of sea surface height indicate it to be a region of regular eddy formation. However, the eddies there were not found to be suitable as they lacked closed cores, so the ship returned to an eddy at 48?S; 15?W which clearly had one. On 27th January a 300 km2 patch in the centre of the core was fertilized with 2 tonnes of dissolved iron (10 tonnes of granular FeSO4). The processes occurring in the patch were followed for 39 days with interdisciplinary measurements of physical, chemical and biological parameters; in between the patch was re-fertilized with an additional 2 tonnes of dissolved iron after 18 days. The ship left the patch on 6th March for Punta Arenas.
