Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Cruise P366/1 was carried out in the frame of the International Graduate College EUROPROX "Proxies in Earth History" which is funded by the German and Netherlands Research Foundations DFG and NWO. The following Universities and research institutes participate in EUROPROX: University of Bremen, Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Universiteit Utrecht, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Universite de Bordeaux, Southampton Oceanography Centre, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston), University of Vigo (Spanien), University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK), Universite Marie Curie (Paris), Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE) in Gif sur Yvette (Frankreich). The main objective of EUROPROX is the development, refinement and application of so-called proxy parameters and proxy methods which allow the accurate reconstruction of paleoceanographic, paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions from marine archives. The study area of leg P366/1 - the Moroccan and Mauretanien shelf and slope between Cape Yubi and Cape Timiris - which is characterized by strong gradients and temporal variability in coastal upwelling and Saharan dust input represents an ideal site to study the influence of terrestrial and marine input as well as early diagenetic processes on the formation and preservation of various sedimentary proxy signals.
