Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Field measurement campaigns were conducted in two successive years in the sea area between Tallinn and Helsinki. In 2006 the measurements were conducted 7 times in summer period in order to document possible hydrophysical processes responsible for the transport of inorganic nutrients below the thermocline to the upper mixed layer and to estimate the importance of those nutrient fluxes to the ecosystem of the Gulf of Finland. During the filed campaigns it was possible to register one of the largest upwelling events during last years in this sea area and to measure the nutrient fluxes connected with this process. In 2007 the measurements were conducted 8 times in spring in order to follow the nutrient dynamics, beginning of nutrient limitation causing the decline of the spring bloom, and register the phytoplankton summer minimum and nutrient concentrations at that time. Inorganic nitrogen was exhausted by the beginning of May and spring bloom was declining by the middle of May. There were still detectable amounts of inorganic phosphates left by the beginning of June and a biomass rise of cyanobacterium Aphanizomenon was registered already in the middle of May in a very surface layer.
