Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The objectives of the cruise were 1) chemical and biological monitoring of the Gulf of Finland (HELCOM COMBINE 3), 2) multidisciplinary marine research took place on 2b) seabed studies, 2c) cyanobacteria blooms, 2d) bio-optical observations and 2e) zooplankton-cyanobacteria interactions. \n\nChemical monitoring revealed slightly improved oxygen conditions and diminished salinity in near bottom water compared to August 2006. Near-bottom phosphate concentrations continued to be high. Hydrogen sulphide occurred at western Gulf of Finland.\n\nCyanobacteria blooms were on the average moderate during the cruise. Contribution of toxic Nodularia spumigena to total biomass was higher than in August 2006.\n\nSediment echosounding was conducted over an about 400 nautical mile route.\n\nOn August 9, 2007, first observation (by Dr. Engstrom-Ost) of a juvenile comb jellyfish, Mnemiopsis leidyi, an invasive species, was made in western Gulf of Finland (station LL13).
