Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Main objective of the cruise was to identify on one hand active and recent fluid vent sites and, on the other, their role in the material exchange between the lithosphere and the hydrosphere/atmosphere at the Makran continental margin. Fluid outflow at the seafloor was documented at 15 gas emission sites at the Makran accretionary wedge by acoustic detection using the Parasound system. Based on the flare positions we performed ROV dives to study the active seeps in detail. At various depths (500-3000 m) the generation of complex and dynamic ecosystems were investigated, which are based on the oxidization of reduced fluid components, and in which biological, geochemical and geological processes interact in a unique way. Organisms, mineral precipitates, and sediments were studied with biogeochemical, geochemical, and mineralogical means. Apart from innovative in-situ ROV-based sampling techniques, new geochemical and molecular technology were utilized during the investigations at the sea-floor.
