Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Investigations of SONNE cruise 191 leg 2 were mainly embedded in the scientific rationale of the collaborative research programme COMET, which aims at the investigation and detailed study of methane in the global geo-/biosystem at different cold vent systems and associated gas hydrates. The working area was the Hikurangi accretionary complex along the east coast of New Zealand's northern island . COMET(Controls on methane fluxes and their climatic relevance in marine gas hydrate-bearing environments) addresses the complex physico-chemical and biogeochemical control parameters on marine methane fluxes and turnover rates from gas hydrate-bearing sediments into the water column and the atmosphere. This is pursued by deploying innovative technologies such as integrative long-term observatories and experimental in-situ platforms that investigate the filter function of organisms in the sediment, the sediment boundary layer and the water column. Methane-derived carbonates serve as natural geo-archives where past environmental conditions can be reconstructed by the application of refined paleo-proxies. SO191-2 was a multidisciplinary cruise addressing biological, microbiological, biogeochemical, geological and hydrographical objectives. Main objectives were the measurement of benthic boundary layer bio-geochemical fluxes, fluid and gas flows and investigations of specific ecosystems such as anoxic chemosynthetically based sediment communities.
