Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The main goal of P347 was to quantify the physical and biogeochemical processes in the upwelling region off Mauritania during the period of maximum upwelling. Our primary objectives were: (1) to investigate diapycnal mixing process and to quantify addy difffusivities, (2) to quantify lateral exchange between the shelf region and deeper ocean by eddies, filaments and large-scale advection, (3) to quantify vertical advection, (4) to quantify oceanic emission of CO2 und N2O. These objectives were achieved by using a combination of state of the art measuring systems such as microstructure profiler, profiling CTD, LADCP and Ocean Surveyor current profiler. During P347, research activities concentrated on the region from 17?N to 19?N and from 16?W to 18?W. At the beginning, a Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) and microstructure shear and temperature (MSS) section was completed along 18?W. Two moorings were deployed, one on the continental slope and on the second on the shelf. After some stations along the continental slope and the shelf region, a box was sampled surrounding the upwelling region. A 36 hour microstructure station along the continental slope at 18?W followed before a second box was sampled. Measurement program was terminated after mooring recovery. Water samples collected during CTD casts were analyzed for salinity, oxygen, SF6, N2O, Helium, nutrients and POC. Underway measurements.
