Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Zoobenthos sampling in the German Bight The cruise was part of the macrobenthos long-term research of AWI Wattenmeerstation Sylt. We quantify the natural variability of benthos and the physical environment in order to (1) reveal the long-term (decadal) trends, and (2) enable reasonable hypotheses regarding causes and effects between benthos and environment. This is achieved by sampling an area of some 8,000 km? with 100 sampling stations spread from Helgoland to the Danish border every year in September (since 2004). From 2005 to 2007 these studies are expanded by additional samplings in July and August, covering the same sampling sites. This expansion tries to test the hypotheses (1) the spatial distribution of early benthic stages depends on the current regime in early summer, and (2) recruitment success is overruled by extreme events during summer.
