Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Physical, biological resarch and fishery oceanography Within the scope of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) since 1972 a continuous research on distribution and abundance of herring larvae has been undertaken in the North Sea and adjacent waters. The main herring spawning grounds in the North Sea are object to this annual survey program which is known as the 'International Herring Larvae Surveys in the North Sea' (IHLS). Almost all countries surrounding the North Sea have participated in the history of the IHLS, while in recent years the Netherlands and Germany contribute most to the surveys. The results of the surveys are used as an important estimator of herring spawning stock biomass and thus are of value for the stock assessment and the fixation of fishing quotas. First aim of this cruise was the implementation of the German part of the IHLS. The ICES area IVa North Sea was covered partly. Within thes area 169 stations were covered with sampling by double oblique tows with the 'Nackthai' (modified GULF III sampler) and CTD. Herring larval abundance was estimated. The second part was a programme on the small-scale distribution of fish larvae and their prey. The in-situ distribution was measured with the help of the Ichthyoplankton Recorder (IPR) on two transects in the survey area. Additional sampling of herring larvae for biochemical analyses was performed on one station.
