Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Geophysical investigation of spreading segment processes The cruise set out to investigate processes of ridge segmentaiton at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between 5 and 12 degrees south. The first study area was at about 5 S, where magnetic (M) and gravity profiles were used to investigate the spreading history and crustal structure. Then a long wide-angle seismic profile was collected using ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) to determine crustal structure between the North and South Ascension Fracture Zones. A small 3D grid over the active spreading center between these fracture zones was also collected; the instruments also recorded seismic activity. Further work concentrated on the segments to the south. A 3D wide-angle grid and a deep tow survey (DTS) were collected over segment A-BV3 where an axial high is present. Two parallel N-S profiles were collected parallel to the spreading axis of segment A-BV1 where an axial valley exists. These instruments also recorded seismic activity. Gravity (GRAV) and swath-bathymetry (SB) were collected along all profiles.
