Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Investigation of biogenic (Cyanobacteria) produced volatile halogenated organic compounds (VHOC) in the seawater of the Baltic Sea. In particular the aims were to investigate if cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea produce VHOC and in which concentration they are set free into the seawater. For this purpose cyanobacteria blooms had to be located the position of which was identified using satellite pictures transferred daily to the ship. Within a bloom CTD and Fluorescence profiles were measured. Additionally, water samples were taken with the rosette and phytoplankton was collected using the plankton net. Water samples containing the cyanobacteria were used for culturing experiments to measure halocarbon production. VHOC were purged from the seawater samples for later stable carbon isotope analysis in the lab. Water samples were also taken for oxygen and nutrient determination.
