Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

SO-167 visited the South Tonga volcanic arc, Valu Fa Ridge, Osbourn Trough and the Louisville Ridge. The overall aim was to ground truth and document the geochemistry of the Louisville Ridge and Osbourn Trough for the first time, and examine how their subduction at the Tonga-Kermadec Trench affects magma genesis and volcanism at the adjacent South Tonga arc and backarc Valu Fa Ridge. Four sites in the South Fiji Basin were dredged on a contract basis for New Zealand scientists. Key objectives were to obtain fresh lavas by dredging from all localities for geochemical analysis, and to locate and sample active hydrothermal systems. In addition, biota attached to dredged lavas, associated with hydrothermal venting, and plankton at various sites along the cruise track were collected.
