Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The purpose of the cruise was the testing of new geophysical equipment acquired within the INGGAS project (Integratede geophysical characterisation and quantification of gas hydrates). This equipment consisted of new seismic sources (including a seafloor weight-drop system - WD), a short hydrophone streamer (STR), ocean bottom seismometers (OBS), a deep-towed hydrophone streamer (DTS) and an acoustic positioning system (P). The equipment was designed to provide improved resolution of the structure of gas hydrate bearing sediments and of their physical properties. Also used were SIMRAD swath-bathymetry (SB) and a magnetometer (M). Most of the testing was carried out in the Yaquina Basin area offshore Peru (80.5W, 8.5 S), a region of known gas hydrate occurrence. All the equipment functioned well, with most time being devoted to work with the deep-tow streamer.
