Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Expedition SO129 was dedicated to the research programme "Biogeochemical Transports of Matter and Energy in the Deep Sea" (BIGSET sponsored by the German Ministry of Education and Research.Investigations aimed to assess carbon, nutrient turn over in the benthic boundary layer of the abyssal NE-Atlantic an oceanic area with seasonally largely enhanced biogeochemical fluxes triggered by the by the deposition of the spring phytoplankton bloom. Expedition POS 260 was laid out to perform a series of in situ experiments simulating the deposition of phytodetritus on the sea floor in lander integrated benthic chambers and to follow the benthic reaction. The natural system was studied at the same time with conventional sampling. 3 Landers were deployed repeatedly. A lander with time lapse camera, ADCP and sediment trap and a separate sediment trap mooring was deployed for 65 days.
