Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The "Meteor"-cruise No. 8 was part of the international Greenland Sea Project (GSP) which is aimed at understanding the processes of high latitude water mass transformation and their implications for the biota and at measureing the amount of deep and intermediate waters formed during the season 1988/89 in the Greenland Sea. A total of live seasonal surveys of the Greenland Sea is being conducted in summer '88 ("Polarstern", "Valdivia", "Hakon Mosby"), in autumn '88 ("Meteor"), in winter '89 ("Valdivia", "Baffin") in early summer '89 ("Polarstern", "Hakon Mosby") and late summer '89 ("Valdivia"). This "Meteor"-cruise was divided into two cruise-legs. Leg 2 was a repeat of a large-scale grid of hydro-biological stations already worked in summer '88.
